Country star Jennifer Nettles is noticeably absent from Farmer Wants a Wife this season, and fans have questions. The Sugarland vocalist—who previously guided farmers through their romantic journeys on the series—has been replaced without much explanation. So, what prompted the sudden change?
The hosting switch became apparent when Kimberly Williams-Paisley appeared in recent promos for the rural dating show. With no official statement addressing Nettles’ departure, speculation has naturally followed. Just months ago, Nettles seemed comfortable in her role, describing herself as part “matchmaker” and part “fairy Godmother” to the show’s romantically challenged farmers.
What happened to Jennifer Nettles on Farmer Wants a Wife?

Though Nettles hasn’t directly addressed why she left the show, her schedule tells a pretty clear story. In April 2024, the singer revived her musical duo Sugarland with Kristian Bush at the CMT Awards after a six-year hiatus. By August, they’d released their EP There Goes the Neighborhood and launched a tour with Little Big Town that ran from October through December.
Looking at the timeline, production on Season 3 of Farmer Wants a Wife would have likely overlapped with these commitments. TV filming schedules aren’t exactly flexible, so something probably had to give with Nettles juggling multiple major projects.
As it turns out, music isn’t the only thing keeping Nettles busy. The former host is also continuing her acting work on HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones as Aimee-Leigh Gemstone. According to TV Insider, she’s also developed “Giulia: The Poison Queen of Palermo,” a musical she wrote herself that’s scheduled to run from late November through December 2025.
In March 2024, Nettles told First For Women that she enjoyed her hosting role: “I started watching the farmers and it felt like they needed some encouragement here and there and maybe some guidance. I enjoyed taking on that role somewhere between matchmaker and fairy Godmother, maybe a little bit of a translator.”
Since Nettles’ departure, Kimberly Williams-Paisley has taken over hosting duties, with Fox confirming the change in December 2024. The actress brings her own connection to country life through her 21-year marriage to country music star Brad Paisley.
“I enjoyed being myself in this show, which was a new experience for me with my first unscripted series,” Williams-Paisley said in a press release. “Because I’m a city girl who embraced the country life when I married my husband 21 years ago, I related to the allure of a farmer for these ladies.”
She added, “I really appreciate how dedicated this show and its producers are in helping these hopeful farmers and women find love.”
For those interested in seeing how the show evolves under its new host, Farmer Wants a Wife continues airing on Fox. Meanwhile, Nettles’ fans can catch her on tour or in her various other creative ventures this year.
Farmer Wants a Wife Season 3 premiered on Thursday, March 20, 2025 on Fox.
