Hailee Steinfeld was in London serving fire looks for the European premiere of her new film Sinners, a supernatural horror movie that takes place in the Jim Crow South. In tandem with the film’s fiery imagery, Steinfeld herself tapped in with this stunning fiery printed mesh gown designed by Robert Wun.
The dress comes from Robert Wun’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection. It features an asymmetric neckline with one strap and an enflamed print up by the top and down the train. The look is incomplete without the matching sheer mesh opera gloves. The sheer gown goes way down to the floor, but underneath it is a black bodysuit. The gown is made of a translucent black mesh, which we know is trendy both in high fashion, but it has long been part of punk political and music subcultures. We’re personally feeling a bit nostalgic for the mall trip to Hot Topic.

There’s quite a lot of discussion about subcultures and fashion, and while it’s definitely true that mainstream fashion steals from subcultures, forcing them to reinvent their codes, it’s definitely true that a lot of fashion fans themselves have early dressing roots in Hot Topic. The printed mesh on a high fashion garment, especially from the mind of designer Robert Wun, whose artistic language is very much edgy and art-forward.
Steinfeld has been dressing lightly on theme for the film. While many have a lot of thoughts on the whole “method dressing” concept, with some feeling like the concept gets overly drawn out over long press tours for films like Barbie or Wicked, there’s an undeniable fact that it clearly works. If not for fashion, then at least to get attention on the film. And this dress on Steinfeld certainly does.
